Creating a Contemporary Identity for Dumpling Republic

Dumpling Republic, a Singapore-based brand, underwent a branding project led by designer Lawrens Tan to create a modern and premium identity. The design aimed to capture the essence of the brand's contemporary and fun approach to dumplings, while also reflecting its high-quality offerings.

The inspiration for the design came from the desire to create a visual identity that was both contemporary and premium. The team conducted extensive research to determine the overall execution and shape of the dumplings, which would be the key element of the logo. Additionally, they sought to incorporate chopsticks, a commonly used utensil for holding dumplings, into the design.

What sets Dumpling Republic's branding project apart is its focus on modernity, class, and premium quality. The logo features a stylized icon of a dumpling, perfectly capturing the shape and size of the product. The color palette, consisting of brown resembling gold, white, and black, further enhances the brand's premium image. The tagline, "Yes it's true. We have fillings for you," adds a touch of humor and wit to the overall design.

In terms of production, Dumpling Republic utilizes labels and box sleeves for packaging. These are slotted into the dumpling boxes, ensuring freshness and ease of delivery. The sleeve covers feature sticker labels that provide information on the order number, flavor, and date of production.

The design team, led by Lawrens Tan and Danielle Grace, successfully infused humor and wit into the overall design. The tagline, in particular, evokes a sense of playfulness and creativity, emphasizing the brand's focus on experimenting with different fillings and flavors.

The Dumpling Republic branding project was completed in September 2020, with the website launching concurrently. The team faced the challenge of differentiating the brand from traditional Chinese dumplings commonly associated with China. By introducing unique flavors such as pulled pork, kimchi, and miso, Dumpling Republic broke the perception that dumplings can only contain Chinese ingredients. This playful and contemporary approach to fillings further reinforced the brand's identity.

The Dumpling Republic branding project received the Iron A' Design Award in 2022 in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The brand's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.
